Romaine Quinn
Quinn announces mayor bid
Rice Lake City Councilman Romaine Quinn has announced he will run for mayor.

"I will be circulating signature papers for the position of Mayor of Rice Lake. Voters should have choices when they cast their ballots. I want to be one of those choices," he said in a written statement announcing his candidacy.

Up for election in 2010 are the mayor's post, four at-large City Council seats, the District 3 council seat, and the municipal judge's post. The at-large posts are now held by Sue Dietz, Larry Nitz, Quinn and Eric Kasper. The District 3 post is held by Dave Armstrong, who was appointed following the resignation of Rod Powers. Dan Fitzgerald is the mayor.

The spring election is April 6. There will be a primary election on Feb. 16 if necessary.

Quinn was elected to the council in April. He was the top vote-getter in a field of four for two open at-large seats. At the time he was an 18-year old high school senior, possibly the youngest council member ever elected in the city.

"Over the past year of serving on the City Council I have observed and learned. Some of what I have observed I have not liked. Some of what I have heard leads me to believe that many Rice Lake citizens are ready for a real 'shake-up' down at city hall.

"A new perspective is needed to look at the process in which we reach decisions. When 'that is the way it has always been done' becomes a standard answer to questions, it is time for fresh ideas. Allowing a single person or a small group of people outside of the City Council to make important decisions is not the way local government was intended to operate," he wrote.

"Over the next few months I will be expressing my views on many issues facing the city. I look forward to the election process and I encourage citizens to contact me with any questions or concerns. I can be reached at "romainquinn_90@yahoo.com" or my home at 236-7887.

"I also want to encourage any citizens interested in running for City Council to do so. You can make a difference," he wrote.

Nomination papers are available at City Hall. They must be returned to City Hall by Jan. 5 at 5 p.m.
